How To: Improve the speed of Apple XCode

Here is the problem I faced few days ago..

Lately I have been working on a old G5 dual core Machine. Well, the project was a huge one, containing around 2k source files.

Since, I started working on this project, XCode completely lost its responsiveness. XCode was so slow that, when I typed something, it was apparently taking few seconds to show them-up on screen.

I have been working on XCode on the same machine, for few small projects and I had never faced this kind of problem.

I searched many forums and apple website/mailing list and found no solution, whatsoever. :-(

After so much of R&D, I was able to find out the cause of this XCode problem.

Well, It was the source code indexing process, which slowed down the XCode.

and the solution for this is to turn off the code indexing feature.

I turned off the code indexing, and voila!, XCode was as fast as it was before!

Turning off code indexing will speed up your XCode. Code indexing is a slow process, particularly when
  • you have low system memory
  • you have a slow processor
  • you are working on a very huge project.
Only side-effect of this is that, Once you turn of code indexing, you will no longer be able to do Jump to definition(command + double click)

To turn the indexing off, follow the following steps.

Skill level: Beginner

step1: Open Xcode
step2: Goto XCode -> Preferences ( Shortcut key: Command key + , )
step3: Goto Code sence tab
step4: Under Indexing, uncheck the check box for "Enable for all projects"

That's it!

Here are images..

Before.

After.

Only side effect of this is that, you will no longer be able to do Jump to definition(command + double click) on your source file.

Please comment, if you have any suggestions.

New Apple Ad: Mac Guy vs PC Guy

Apple has released a new TV ad of their popular Mac Guy vs PC Guy series.

The new ad is related to the common complaints against Windows Vista. In this ad Apple makes fun of Windows Vista, by kind of supporting Windows Vista's problems. However at the end they also say that, Most users feel much happy after downgrading back to Windows XP.

This ad is pretty cool, Apple is able to sum up all the common problems related to Windows Vista and also the ultimate solution to Vista's problems. (Downgrading back to Windows XP or Buying a new Mac)

Well, I was really expecting Apple to release some ad of this kind. It looks like Apple waited till the Leopard's release.

Anyways at the end, This ad is brilliant as usual. Worth watching. :-)

Apple is now much more greener than before !

Today Apple CEO Steve Jobs in apple site announced the company's plans towards much more greener Apples. :-)

Greener Apple

Referring to criticism by many environmental organizations, Jobs said

Apple has been criticized by some environmental organizations for not being a leader in removing toxic chemicals from its new products, and for not aggressively or properly recycling its old products. Upon investigating Apple's current practices and progress towards these goals, I was surprised to learn that in many cases Apple is ahead of, or will soon be ahead of, most of its competitors in these areas. Whatever other improvements we need to make, it is certainly clear that we have failed to communicate the things that we are doing well.

It is generally not Apple's policy to trumpet our plans for the future; we tend to talk about the things we have just accomplished. Unfortunately this policy has left our customers, shareholders, employees and the industry in the dark about Apple's desires and plans to become greener. Our stakeholders deserve and expect more from us, and they're right to do so. They want us to be a leader in this area, just as we are in the other areas of our business. So today we're changing our policy.
Talking about iPod recycling program, Jobs said,
All of Apple's U.S. retail stores, which now number more than 150, take back unwanted iPods for environmentally friendly disposal free of charge. As an incentive, we even offer customers a 10% discount on a new iPod when they bring their old iPod to our stores for proper disposal. This summer we're expanding it to Apple retail stores worldwide, and we're also extending it to include free shipping from anywhere in the U.S. No product purchases are required for any of our free take back programs. In a few months, we think we'll have 'best of breed' iPod recycling programs in the U.S., and we plan to continue to expand our free iPod recycling programs globally in the future.
Also Jobs today officially revealed the company's plans to switch to light-emitting diodes from fluorescent lamps for LCD back lights.
To eliminate mercury in our displays, we need to transition from fluorescent lamps to light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to illuminate the displays.
The usage of LED means, much more greener display with less energy consumption along with longer battery life.

Well, Apple's recycling program and policy about removing the toxic materials from their new products was always bugging me !! Many of the environmental organizations had claimed that, Apple has showed a very little interest towards the environment protection.

I am happy that at last people like me got the answer from Apple for which we were waiting for !! I really hope that, this article would clear the misunderstanding of environmental organizations towards Apple. I also hope many other companies would follow the path Apple to protect our environment. Its our duty to preserve the earth and removing the toxic chemicals from electronic items and recycling old items is our first step toward it.

Well, Thanks to Steve Jobs. You are my favorite person. Thanks for revealing the right information in right time. Steve, You just gave me one more damn good reason to love Apples. :-)

It is a good news to apple fans that our beloved company apple is now becoming much more greener than before. :-)
